Here is perhaps the best scene from one of my favorite comedies of all-time. The film was written and directed by John Hughes, who tragically past away back in early August. He remains one of the best directors of his era in terms of expertly mixing comedy and drama, and this film could very well be his finest work. Steve Martin and John Candy also turn in career-best caliber performances, and their fine work is on full display in the scene below.

Man, this is such an unbelievable clip - one of John Candy's best moments, if not the best in any of the movies. Takes your breath away.

I wish people were writing and directing films like this these days.

@ Daniel: Agreed. I watched this again over Thanksgiving, and considering how powerful the clip is, it's surprising that it comes rather early in the film. I think it's a testament to the performances and Hughes' tender direction.

Even though this film is hardly 90 minutes long, we get to know these characters so well that it is very difficult not to be moved by where the story ends up going.

It is THE Thanksgiving movie to top all others. I can't think of anything that even comes close.
