Sam Mendes will direct the 23rd installment of the James Bond franchise. This news comes courtesy of Matthew Belloni and Borys Kit over at The Hollywood Reporter.
Apparently, production could begin as early as June with a hopeful 2011 release. Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon, The Damned United) has joined Bond regulars Neal Purvis and Robert Wade to write the script, with Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli to produce. Daniel Craig will return as 007.
Although this announcement caught me completely off-guard, it still has me very intrigued. I have enjoyed many of Sam Mendes' films, including Road to Perdition, which is his most similar genre effort to date. Hopefully he will bring that success to this Bond franchise that seemed to take a bit of a dip with the moderately received Quantam of Solace. My fingers are crossed.
